A guide to taking an enema
Our tip is to ensure that you arein a relaxed environment when you take your enema. Get everything ready before you start and be sure to have everything you need close to hand.
Try to plan time so that you will not be disturbed half way through (switch off your mobile phone, turn off your TV etc). Get the 'mood' right with candles, play soft music. You may like to read a magazine as you take your enema or do positive visualisations. Have plenty of warm fresh towels to hand. Make sure that your bathroom is warm and tidy.
Connect all the equipment together. Make sure that the tap mechanism is closed. |
Fill the enema bag or bucket with warm filtered distilled water or bottled water. A half a litre should be enough until you are more experienced in this procedure. There are suggested recipes on this site. |
Run some of the water through the tube and out of the tap to release any air in the long tubing or tap. Close the tap ready to start. |
Suspend the water bottle less than three feet above the hips from a convenient hook or supporting rail. Enemas use gravity to feed the water down from the bag through the tube and into your anus so the suspension height is important to ensure the right flow rate. |
Apply lubricating jelly (olive oil is good) to the enema tube. |
Lie on your right hand side and insert the lubricated enema tube into the anus. Do this slowly and without force. If you prefer you can start by giving yourself the enema while lying in a bath of warm water – very comforting. (Have clean fresh towels to hand so you can wrap yourself up warm when you need to go to the toilet because you may not have time to dry yourself off before going to the toilet.) |
Start feeding the water through into your anus, open the tap to allow the water to flow. Gravity will feed the water down through the tube for as long as the tap is open. You may feel more comfortable letting the water feed down in stages rather than trying to take it in all in one go. |
Hold the water for as long as you can and then sit on the lavatory to allow the evacuation of faecal matter and water. Don’t rush, strain or force. You will be able to hold onto the water for longer periods with practice and the process is very much personal thing. Find the right way for you. Over time it will become very straightforward. |
Don't forget that it's really important to clean the equipment after use. Use a gentle but effective sterilising solution. Find out more about this from our 'Care of your equipment page'. |

Dry skin brushing
The skin is an organ of elimination just like the kidneys, lymph, lungs, liver and colon. More than a kilo of waste products are discharged through the skin every day provided the pores are not blocked. If the pores are blocked then the elimination of toxins becomes less effective and the other eliminative organs will have to increase their labour to compensate – probably becoming overworked. Washing with soap and water is not effective enough to assist in waste elimination.
Rather than wetting the skin to clean it you brush the skin while it is dry. The skin brushing will change the health of your whole body. Improving your circulation, skin softness and quality, skin infections and irritations, whole body freshness, prevent colds and rejuvenate your system. Make it a regular habit and see the benefits. By all means enjoy your soapy baths and showers but use dry skin brushing as a regular routine detox.
It's important to brush the skin in the right way. Brush in the direction of your heart. To brush the skin start at the soles of your feet and work your way up your legs, your front and your back, brushing as vigorously as you feel able. Next do your hands and up your arms. Do not do your face but give the back of your next and your scalp a good go! Don't forget, brush in the direction of your heart.
Use a separate brush for each member of the family for hygiene reasons and don't forget to wash the brush every couple of weeks.

Constipation treatment - in summary
If constipated you will need to increase your fibre intake and ensure that you take in adequate volumes of water. We’d suggest you use Cytocleanse and/or Psyllium husks which can be used to good effect. Flaxseed Oil capsules may also be taken. All of these products are available from our shop and are non habit forming. (Try to avoid the use of Laxatives)
Fibre by itself is not enough. It is the water you drink at the same time that will help the fibre to work effectively. You should think in terms of drinking 2 – 3 litres of fluid per day, including, for example, filtered water, pure mineral water and some freshly juiced fruit or vegetable juices. Drink small cups of a variety of fluids regularly throughout the day to really hydrate your system and help the fibre you've taken in do its job.
Avoid wheat in any form, breads, pasta, cakes and products made from refined sugars like biscuits etc. All foods and drinks in their purest most natural form. Eat plenty of raw fruit and vegetables, high fibre muesli from linseeds, pepitas, sunflower, sesame, psyllium husks, oat bran, rice bran, lecitihin granules.
Increase your exercise, take a walk, do some extra housework or go for a swim – it all helps.
When you do finally feel like you'd like to go to the toilet, make it as pleasant for yourself as you can – find a private space and time, ensure that the room is warm and you have everything you need close to hand. Try not to delay responding to your body when you get it, delaying can make matters worse. You may find our notes on squatting of interest (if you can't squat, try to at least raise the level of your feet – it could make things easier). If you can only go a bit that's a start! Once you have started to go to the toilet more easily keep up the routine with fibre, water etc else you could slip back into having problems.
If you are in a real pickle with constipation speak to a colonic therapist – they help people with problems just like yours. Talking to someone who understands your difficulty and can make positive suggestions will really help.
If you don't feel that you can go to see a colonic therapist and want to tackle the issue by yourself we'd suggest you think about how you would best prefer to go to the toilet – maybe you’d feel happier going to the toilet in the bath or shower at first, perhaps squatting into an old washing up bowl that you don't use any more – provided you thoroughly clean and disinfect afterwards it won't matter – the most important thing is that you feel comfortable enough to go when you finally feel able to.
If this is a regular problem you might like to find out more about Colonics, Colemas and Enemas. Having the right equipment to hand may be able to support your long term health and well-being.
